Graphic fragments evolve on a screen. Their behavior and interaction model is inspired by that of water spiders (Gerris, from the Gerridae family) on the surface of a pond. Unable to understand the reasons why an object or organism comes to life, he stubbornly seeks an intentionality, a will outside himself that would express itself through this movement, and then calls on an initiated mediator, the oracle, to transform these encrypted signs into intelligible messages addressed exclusively to himself. This anthropocentric reflex is not exclusive to primitive tribes. Even for us, the idea of chance and the absence of divine determinism in the origin of these movements, as expressed by the Epicureans with regard to atoms, is never self-evident (which is why I wrote \"De notre nature\") and is constantly being rediscovered. A good example of this is the elliptical, mysterious phrase that everyone has heard before, usually thrown in to close a discussion: \"In any case, there is no chance...\". This phrase underlies a related proposition which is that, if you put your mind to it, \"Everything can be explained.\" In these moments, we're usually talking, not about the movement of natural things, but about the movement of things we don't generally understand. And if the intention behind these movements is not that of a god in due form, there is here the affirmation of a universal deterministic principle that governs the world. There is no chance and no insignificance. Everything is a sign, everything makes sense. All that remains is to find the right oracle. Gerridae started from the idea that if everything makes sense, then I'd enjoy producing the signs, or at least the context in which they can emerge. (It is, it seems to me, the artist's job to produce signs). In Gerridae, then, I create the insect pond that is to act as a sign, and leave it up to the viewer to decide when the insects are to express themselves. When he touches the frame with his hand, the electronic \"insects\" turn into a sentence. I've used the structure of the I Ching, along with suggestions from the text generator developed by Jean-Pierre Balpe and Samuel Szoniecky, to produce random poetic propositions which, if the user wants to see it that way, can come close to cryptic divination. I hope, however, that the user will see it above all as poetry that, just as much as prediction, reveals unsuspected aspects of what it's talking about.<\/span><\/p>\n Ne comprenant pas les raisons pour lesquelles un objet ou un organisme s'anime, il cherche obstin\u00e9ment une intentionnalit\u00e9, une volont\u00e9 ext\u00e9rieure \u00e0 lui qui s'exprimerait par ce mouvement, puis fait intervenir un m\u00e9diateur initi\u00e9, l'oracle, pour transformer ces signes crypt\u00e9s en messages intelligibles qui s'adresseraient exclusivement \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame. Ce r\u00e9flexe anthropocentriste n'est pas l'apanage des tribus primitives. M\u00eame pour nous, l'id\u00e9e du hasard et de l'absence de d\u00e9terminisme divin dans l'origine de ces mouvements, telle qu'exprim\u00e9e par les Epicuriens \u00e0 propos des atomes, ne s'impose jamais d'elle-m\u00eame (c'est pour cela que j'ai fait \"De notre nature\") et est constamment \u00e0 red\u00e9couvrir. J'en veux pour preuve cette phrase elliptique et myst\u00e9rieuse, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement lanc\u00e9e pour clore une discussion et que tout le monde \u00e0 d\u00e9j\u00e0 entendu: \"De toute fa\u00e7on, il n'y a pas de hasard\u2026\" Cette phrase sous-tend une proposition connexe qui est que, si on s'en donne la peine, \"Tout s'explique.\" Dans ces moments l\u00e0, on parle g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement, non pas du mouvement des choses naturelles, mais du mouvement des choses que l'on ne comprend pas en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral. Et si l'intention qui pr\u00e9side \u00e0 ces mouvements n'est pas celle d'un dieu en bonne et due forme, il y a l\u00e0 l'affirmation d'un principe d\u00e9terministe universel qui r\u00e9gente le monde. Il n'y a donc pas de hasard et pas d'insignifiant. Tout fait signe, tout fait sens. Il ne reste qu'\u00e0 trouver le bon oracle.\u00a0Gerridae est partie de l'id\u00e9e que si tout fait sens, j'aurais alors plaisir \u00e0 produire les signes, ou, tout du moins, le contexte dans lequel ces derniers peuvent \u00e9merger. (C'est, il me semble, le travail de l'artiste que de produire des signes). Dans Gerridae, je cr\u00e9e donc la mare aux insectes qui doit faire signe et je laisse au spectateur le choix du moment ou ceux-ci doivent s'exprimer. Lorsqu'il effleure le cadre de sa main, les \"insectes\" \u00e9lectroniques se transforment en phrase. J'ai utilis\u00e9 la structure du Yi King ainsi que des propositions du g\u00e9n\u00e9rateur de texte mis au point par Jean-Pierre Balpe et Samuel Szoniecky pour obtenir des propositions po\u00e9tiques al\u00e9atoires qui peuvent se rapprocher, si l'utilisateur veut le voir en ce sens, d'une divination crypt\u00e9e.
